TURID KARLSEN, SOPRANO
APPLICATION FORM INTERNATIONAL VOICE MASTERCLASS 2023: Turid Karlsen has been professor at The academy of Performing Art in Stuttgart, Germany (Hochschule für Musik und darstellende Kunst) since 2011. Karlsen has held masterclasses in Norway, Denmark, Germany, USA and Mexico. Turid Karlsen is also the artistic leader of Kirsten Flagstad Festival in Hamar/Norway since August 2017. The last time she helt a masterclass in Melbu was in 2022. Turid Karlsen was born in Oslo, Norway. She studied with Mya Besselink in Maastricht, Netherlands and with Ingrid Bjoner in Oslo. She has been a member of the Opera Ensemble of the Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe (1985-1992) and of the Opera Bonn (1992-1997), Germany. |
Early roles include most of the main Mozart roles, Violetta in La Traviata and Mimi in La Bohème, gradually moving on to the more dramatic soprano repertoire: Salome, Il Trovatore (Leonora), Fidelio (Leonore), Der Rosenkavalier (Marschallin), Ariadne auf Naxos, Arabella, Turandot, Lohengrin (Elsa), Der fliegende Holländer (Senta), the latter earning her 2004 the Kirsten Flagstad Award for her excellent performance at the Norwegian Opera. In April 2008 Turid Karlsen sang Senta for the gala opening concert of the new Opera House in Oslo.
She has worked with conductors such as Daniel Barenboim, Dennis Russell Davis, Lawrence Foster, Eliahu Inbal, Leif Segerstam, Jukka Pekka Saraste, Placido Domingo, Hartmut Haenchen, Mariss Jansons and under the artistic direction of Werner Herzog, Gian-Carlo del Monaco and Maximilian Schell. She has performed at opera houses in Los Angeles, Montreal, Palm Beach, Orlando, Quebec, Madison and Dallas as well as in the major concert halls of Madrid, Barcelona, Zürich, Lucerne, Berlin, Munich, Hannover, Hamburg, Amsterdam and Stockholm.

PAT MANWARING, KLAVER

Patricia Manwaring, originally from USA, studied music theory and piano in both America and Germany. She received her Concert Diploma in Chamber Music in Karlsruhe 1981. In 1982 she moved to northern Norway where she earned the title of Associate Professor in Accompaniment at the University of Tromsø, Institute for Music. Manwaring has been accompanist for the voice department in Tromsø for 28 years. She has previously played for In Memory of Kirsten Flagstad International Voice Masterclass in 2015 and 2022. She has played for masterclasses with Anne-Lise Berntsen and worked closely with Marianne Beate Kielland when she was teaching in Tromsø. She has also accompanied such singers as Edith Thallaug, Pia-Gunn Ancker, Thor Inge Falch, Birgitte Christensen, Berit Norbakken Solset, Eivind Kandahl, Siv Oda Hagerupsen, Åse Krystad…and even Olga Marie Mikalsen, just to name a few! |
JACOBUS GLADZIWA, KLAVER
Jacobus Gladziwa was born in Aachen. He completed studies in orchestral conducting and church music in Dresden and Leipzig with two Diploma and two Master’s degrees. Since 2020 he has been a church musician at St. Ludwig in Berlin. Here he leads 3 choirs, organises concert series and conducts concerts himself. In addition, he regularly performs in Germany and other European countries as a conductor, organist and piano accompanist. He has been collaborating with Prof. Turid Karlsen since 2020. Together they performed Gustav Mahler’s 4th Symphony and other works. Curiosity and seeing the unifying elements in music are the hallmarks of his artistic work in particular. |
